About James

James MacPherson is an award-winning singer/songwriter and accomplished musician, producer, publisher, and recording artist.  He is the co-founder/lead singer/guitarist in Bonsai Trees.

Bonsai Trees is a Connecticut based indie-alt-pop-punk band founded by James and drummer Nick Sokol.  In late 2017, Bonsai Trees will release their next full-length LP entitled “Not Bitter”.  James also plans to release a solo LP entitled “Ten Feet Closer”.  These releases were delayed due to a rigorous touring schedule (see “Performances” for details).  Bonsai Trees previously released the single “You Owe Me” in April 2017, the single “CALM” in October 2016, an EP “Live Free and Die“ in 2015, the single “Hurricane Song” in 2015, and their critically acclaimed debut LP “Minimalist“ in 2013.

In addition to performing with Bonsai Trees, James recently toured the US and Canada with the NYC based indie-alt-pop-punk band Manic Pixi.  James is also an accomplished solo performer and award winning singer/songwriter currently recording his first official solo LP “Ten Feet Closer”.  James was honored to receive the 2016 New England RADAR Award for best singer/songwriter under 21 (sponsored by Pavoh.org).  Click to read the full Hartford Courant article.

Singer/songwriter judge Sarah Barrios, also a Connecticut musician and past RADAR award winner, said she was “looking for a songwriter that not only brings presence, rawness and soul to their music, but also has interesting lyrics and interesting chord progressions — that’s a really important package. I thought James did a fantastic job encompassing all of that.”

James
has been passionate about music since childhood.  His parents, also mujames-logo-perro1sicians, noticed his natural abilities at a very young age.  At 8 years old, James started playing bass guitar in the school band as well as electric and acoustic guitar outside of school.  As a preteen, he started writing and recording his songs.  At 13, James made his professional debut on ukulele, performing his song Off The Top Of My Head at the Steve Shore Recovery Trust benefit.  At 14, he started his first band Iron-y with high school friends Andrew Carey, Travis Gorman and Jack Tedone.  At 15, James co-founded Bonsai Trees as a duo with his high school friend Nick Sokol.  For some shows they were joined by bass players Jimi Cryan (2012-2015) and Sean Millane (2016).  Recently, James played bass with Manic Pixi which included Marshall Biever on guitar.  Marshall also plays guitar with Bonsai Trees and will join them for their upcoming tour in the Fall of 2017.  Follow Bonsai Trees on social media for the most current information.

James has performed at hundreds of shows either solo or with one of his bands, and has built up an impressive original song catalog.  All UPCOMING and PAST SHOWS are listed in: PERFORMANCES.  For the most up to date information, follow James on social media…
